Gateway Casino Sudbury Resumes Operations

Last Friday, Gateway Casino and Entertainment resumed operations at one of Ontario's land infrastructure as part of a phased reopening plan. On Friday, the company resumed work at Gateway Casino Sudbury following a serious cyberattack on its IT systems. Meanwhile, a game site in Thunder Bay also restarted around the same time.

Gateway Casino and Entertainment is one of the largest operators of gaming facilities in the country, with a total of 29 sites in British Columbia and Ontario, and another two in Alberta. Gateway Casino Sudbury and Gateway Casino Thunder Bay resumed business on Friday, May 5, 2023 and are currently open to customers. On Friday, customers were able to enjoy slots and limited food and beverage offerings. But on Saturday, both casinos began offering full service, as well as table games and other amenities.

On April 16, 2023, the operator announced that it would close all 14 Ontario game venues after experiencing a cybersecurity incident. However, Unipo Local 1090 - which represents union workers at Casino Lamar - recently shared an alert about a possible personal data leak, even after most properties reopened.

In a recent memo, the union said it wanted to make sure the operators had taken appropriate steps to protect against the potential impact of the breach and would continue to cancel shifts until the system was restored and activated.

The company said in a press release last week that it is working 24 hours a day with third-party experts to determine whether personal information has been leaked, and that cyber incidents have been reported to related personal information protection officials, law enforcement and government regulators, and will continue to provide updates on them.
